Fluoride helps prevent dental caries. It re-mineralises the tooth strengthening the weaker areas of it. Fluoride is naturally found in water and food but also in dental products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, gel or supplements. The child needs fluoride supplements! Children between 6 months and 16 years of age can be given fluoride supplements. The paediatric dentist considers several factors before recommending the fluoride supplement, factors such as the child’s age, the risk of developing caries, as well as the water that your child drinks : filtered or bottled. Because the fluoride concentration varies, an analysis of the water is needed in determining the required level of fluoride.
